Filmbox

A joint collaboration between KIFF and Creative Youth.

Creative Youth and KIFF share a deep commitment to fostering creativity, extending beyond our summer festivals to provide opportunities for emerging artists in Kingston and beyond throughout the year.

We host monthly sessions at FuseBox for young filmmakers, fostering connections and collaboration. This initiative, driven by our KIFF Youth Steering Group, brings together university, college, and sixth-form students to shape the future of the artistic landscape in our borough.

Participants have voted to name this project "FilmBox," a clever nod to the location—FuseBox—and our main objective: film. This is a free monthly club, and each session will be different from the last, carefully curated by and for our young audiences.

In October, we were fortunate enough to invite five of our alumni KIFF filmmakers to be part of a panel: Alexander Kairo, Peter Simmons, Mariam Majid, Shelagh McLeod, and host Jelena Lützel (right to left).

One key takeaway from this discussion was the emphasis on teamwork in filmmaking. Just as organising the festival requires the collective efforts of our team, volunteers, filmmakers, and audience members, creating a film is inherently a collaborative endeavor.

Join us this November for an exciting film challenge open to all who have a passion for storytelling through the lens of a camera. We invite you to participate and showcase your creative work in a curated exhibition that will run for two weeks in December. It's a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow filmmakers, share your vision, and celebrate the art of cinema.

We are extremely proud of all the young people who help shape KIFF every year. Vish S. and Karl L. have been part of the KIFF Youth Steering Group since its founding in 2021 and have recently started studying Creative Arts and Humanities at UCL—a new interdisciplinary undergraduate degree that brings together the theory, practice, and wider application of creative writing, film, moving image, and performance.

They are currently working on a short mockumentary that will premiere at KIFF 2025.

Newly joining us is Melissa W., whose short film about her life at the Cambridge Road Estate was shown at KIFF 2023. She has now started a media course at Kingston College and will be doing her work experience with KIFF.
