What a privilege it was for KIFF to welcome legendary British writer, director and producer Mike Leigh for a special conversation with Adrian Wootton OBE, Chief Executive of the British Film Commission and Film London. Having two OBEs on the KIFF stage made the occasion even more memorable.
During a fascinating and insightful discussion, Adrian guided the audience through Mike’s remarkable body of work, including Secrets & Lies, Vera Drake, and Mr. Turner. Across a career spanning more than five decades, Leigh has directed 16 feature films, from his first in 1971 to his latest release due later this year. Together, his films have earned 18 Academy Award nominations and 32 BAFTA nominations.
In addition to his acclaimed film career, Mike has written and directed numerous television productions and more than 20 stage plays, most notably Abigail’s Party.
The atmosphere in the auditorium was electric as Mike spoke openly about his creative process, reflected on key moments from his career, and answered audience questions with warmth, honesty and humour. It was an unforgettable event and a true highlight of the festival.
Following the talk Mike was presented with the KIFF Spirit of Independence Award.
